Sound clip of Orca Whale Songs (8 min. 49 sec.)
by James Speed Hensinger
The first 3 seconds have engine noise masking some of the songs.
Recorded September 9-12, 1986 in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Vancouver using SONY hydrophones and a SONY Walkman while sailing aboard the 68' ketch, Island Roamer. At the time the professional SONY recorder on board was damaged. Borrowing the SONY hydrophones from the kit, I plugged them into the microphone input of my SONY Walkman (WM-F65)FM/AM Stereo Cassette-corder) which I brought on board to play music for personal entertainment. The hydrophones were lowered perhaps twenty feet over the side. Occasionally, in the background my voice can be heard along with some shipboard clunks and thumps. I had no idea how sensitive the hydrophones were.
